I’ve read in many recent plurks about Wendy’s new burger, Baconator.  And many seems to be craving it, so I guess it must really taste good.  So I went out one time and had a takeout Baconator.

Well, one thing’s for sure: it looks like Wendy’s good whipping up a mashed up mess of bacon strips and burgers.  I’m not sure it looked like this because it was a takeout and if it would have looked better if served as dine-in order.  I don’t know what else was on the mind of the one in the kitchen who whipped up this sandwich, except for “I want to end this shift already!  Let’s get this over with!”

Well, it doesn’t really look that much presentable or appetizing.  But still, this bulky sandwich made up of six strips (and indeed, it contained six strips) of hickory smoked bacon and 2 beef patties, each 1/4 lbs., seems to fill up a craving for a heavy, high-fat meal.

From Wendy’s Nutrition fact page, here’s what exactly you’re getting eating this sandwich:

    • 830 calories (for a sedentary 50-kg person, that’s already half of the required amount of calories for the day)
    • 51 g total fat (for a sedentary 50-kg person, that’s already 2x the amount of fat he requires for the day)
    • 35 g carbohydrates
    • 56 g protein (for a sedentary 50-kg person, that’s more than half of the required amount of protein for the day.  Definitely not for those on low-protein diets like patients with renal disease)

But then, not really many people count their daily caloric intake, and are more concerned whether they liked the taste of their meal or not.  Taste-wise, it’s okay.  Presentation, definitely not presentable.  Healthy meal?  Definitely no.

Still, it’s a good burger sandwich.  I’d like another, one of these days.  But, of course, I can’t have that everyday.  And I’m not really a burger person so…

One of the best ways to unwind from a from-duty stress and tiredness is a tasty, generous lunch.  I mean, after all that stress having to cover 5 floors full of patients for 24 hours!  Having your fill of gastronomic delight is one of those ways of telling yourself it’ll be okay.  Haha.

And so I’m glad when my folks decided to try dining at Sumosam, which is located at the 6th floor of Shangri-La Mall in Mandaluyong.  Even if I frequent this mall 2x-3x a week, still, I haven’t been able to try this resto until today (or perhaps I like it better if somebody treats me to this place, instead of paying for my own meal, hehe).

First impression is that a lot of people do come to this place.  We had to be in the waiting list for a while before we were able to get seated.  Dad says the crowd usually is an indicator if a restaurant is a good place to dine in.  And in this case, I think it is true.

    Sukiyaki, P300+

(I apologize for the quality of the photos.  Wasn’t able to bring my camera with me and I used only my phone in taking these photos.)

While we’re still making up our minds about which food to order for our main course, we ordered first a large bowl of Sukiyaki, which is enough to share with 3-4 people.  I find that the salty taste a bit overwhelming, because I prefer that Sukiyaki a bit sweeter.  Still it’s a soup worth ordering.

    Salmon sashimi, P208

Of course, my Japanese meal wouldn’t be complete without my order of salmon sashimi.  I love that they’ve provided a slice of lemon, instead of calamansi.  Love, love, love the sour taste on the sweet salmon meat!  And then, dipping it into the soy sauce with wasabi?  Perfect!

    Bacon Kani, P208

Now, this one is one of Sumosam’s Mawashi dishes.  Mawashi refers to the belt that is worn by the rikishi (or sumo wrestler) during training or competition.  And perhaps, the dishes were so named because of how the food are wrapped with a “belt”.  So here’s kani meat wrapped with a delicious slice of bacon and drizzled with what I think is teriyaki sauce.  First bite onto it and I already fell in love.  I’ll surely order this again :-)

I also love that waiters serve food fast and that they’re very courteous.  While we were still in the waiting list, they update us on how far we are on the list and how many minutes we may still have to wait before being seated.  They also respond quick and well to our requests, even if the place was jam-packed.  I’ll definitely go back there to try the other delicious-looking dishes.

How about you?  What is your Sumosam experience?
